1.Hard steel is steel with higher carbon content and greater hardness, but more brittle. Steel is synthesized by adding carbon (C) to iron (Fe), which becomes hard or soft depending on the C content.
2.The difference between mild steel and hard steel is determined by the C content:
C content below 0.15% --- very mild steel
Content 0.81~1.30%---Extremely hard steel
In fact, in addition to carbon (C), steel is also mixed with silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S). These elements and carbon (C) are collectively called the five elements of steel. When the chemical composition of steel is checked, the five elements are firstly analyzed. The effect of the five elements on the physical properties of steel is as follows:
Carbon (C): an essential and important element in steel, which can increase the hardness and strength of steel;
Silicon (Si) can increase strength and hardness;
Manganese (Mn) can increase the toughness of steel, and high toughness steel contains Mn 1.2% to 1.5%;
Phosphorus (P) is a harmful element in steel, which makes the steel cold brittle. The less the content, the better;
Sulfur (S) and P are both harmful elements that make steel hot brittle.

3.Physical properties
Hard steel and soft steel are divided according to whether they have a yield point or not. Since hard steel has no obvious yield point and has poorer plasticity than soft steel, its control stress coefficient is lower than that of soft steel.

4.Mechanical properties
Hard steel (heat-treated steel bar and high-strength steel wire) has high strength, but poor plasticity and high brittleness. From loading to sudden breaking, there is basically no yield phase (flow amplitude). It is brittle failure.
Steel wire and steel strand belong to hard steel. Hard steel and soft steel are divided according to whether they have a yield point or not. Since hard steel has no obvious yield point and has poorer plasticity than soft steel, its control stress coefficient is lower than that of soft steel.
